Visualizations come in many forms including 2-, 3-, and 4-Dimensional options as well as  Augmented and Virtual Reality.  These visualizations have a number of uses as outlined in the article "Visualizations".

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality integrates visualizations in real world environments.  This technology alters the user’s view of a physical world and can use all five senses of a person.  While augmented reality is becoming increasingly popular in video games (such as Pokémon Go), designers are also utilizing this technology to show real-world impacts of a design.  Computer generated images can be overlaid onto a project site and better communicate design intent.
