The Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Complex Superfund Site (BHSS) is one of the largest and most complex CERCLA sites in the nation, characterized as a “mega-site” by the National Academy of Sciences. The BHSS, located in northern Idaho and eastern Washington, encompasses 1,500 square miles containing 166 miles of flowing rivers and streams as well as thousands of residential/ commercial properties. This work was performed for the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in coordination with additional project partners supporting site remediation and environmental management efforts. WSB’s experts have provided the technical and oversight assistance for all aspects of CERCLA activities to the Idaho DEQ for more than 25 years, with technical services ranging from sampling, plan development, engineering and technical analyses, management assistance, endangerment assessment, legal/administrative services, and community relations. Since the OU1 and 2 RI/FS era, our experts have provided a range of technical, engineering, and scientific services that have resulted in the successful reduction of one of the nation’s worst childhood lead poisoning epidemics, OU3 human health soil cleanup levels and remedial action objectives for the addition of OU3, design and oversight of large waste repositories containing millions of cubic yards of heavy metals-laden materials, and remedial action implementation at nearly 4,000 OU3 properties.
