Minnesota Twins Stadium – High Definition Laser Scan,
Hennepin County

WSB was retained by Hennepin County to provide a high definition laser scan of the proposed Minnesota Twins stadium site in downtown Minneapolis. Topographic survey data was needed on the railroad right-of-way, adjacent to the proposed stadium. This survey data was collected with the laser scanner without the need to enter into the railroad right-of-way. Other structures that where scanned for this project included the following:

  • 10th Street Bridge from the railroad to 3rd Avenue
  • 7th Street Bridge from the railroad to 3rd Avenue
  • 5th Street Bridge from the railroad to 3rd Avenue
  • South bound I-94 Bridge to 4th Street, from railroad to 3rd Avenue
  • 3rd Street North Bridge to Northbound I-94, from railroad to 3rd Avenue
  • Washington Avenue Bridge over railroad
  • Southeast face of garbage incinerator plant
  • Southeast face of Hennepin County Community Works Office Building
  • Northwest face of 7th Street Garage
  • Northwest face of 5th Street Garage
  • Minikahda Mini Storage Building
  • I-394 cut-section, from 4th Street to 7th Street
  • JD Hoyts and adjacent building on Washington Avenue

Over 52 million data points were collected in the field in a little over one week. From this point cloud, we created 2-D and 3-D line work of the bridge sub-structures and wire-mesh framework of the building faces. In addition, a digital terrain model was created of the ground elevations on the railroad right-of-way. The files created were exportable to an AutoCAD environment.

Hennepin County is the lead agency in terms of providing infrastructure to the drip line of the stadium. The County will utilize this high definition laser scan data as needed for the design and construction of the infrastructure required for the new Twins stadium.
