Sweeney Lake Branch of Bassett Creek Improvements
Golden Valley, MN
A wooded, 600 foot segment of the Sweeney Lake Branch of Bassett Creek had been eroding in the backyards of a residential area. The stream receives storm water runoff from a large commercial and residential area in Golden Valley and St. Louis Park and storm water from more than a mile of Interstate 394. High flows had caused erosion of the banks and scour of the bottom of the creek which undermined trees lining the bank and caused meandering of the stream causing sediment to be deposited downstream in Bassett Creek. WSB developed options to address this erosion and provide bank stabilization. These options ranged from hard armoring the banks to using bioengineering techniques with vegetation. The City chose to use primarily a hard armoring approach with some bioengineering techniques. WSB prepared the design and administered the construction document and observation in 2008.
