Bridges of Mower County Design-Build (I-90)

Mower County, MN

Due to deterioration and obsolescent design, four bridges in Mower County on Interstate 90 (I-90) near Austin, Minnesota, are required to be replaced. Some bridges required larger waterway openings and others required higher elevations to meet bridge clearance. Three bridges span waterways (two over Turtle Creek and one over Dobbins Creek), and one flyover bridge (a local roadway) crossing over I-90. The project was completed using the design-build delivery method.

The project involved restricting I-90 traffic to one lane and shifting the traffic to one side of the interstate highway during construction. Hydraulic stream calculations and risk assessments were prepared for each creek crossing along with roadway drainage plans. Specialized SWPPP was developed to handle the dewatering and erosion control to handle construction within the streambed. Close coordination with the DNR and local watershed was necessary for bridge removal permits and construction within the creek banks.

WSB was responsible for final roadway and bridge design, plan preparation, construction coordination, inspection, and construction staking.

Client: Minnesota Department of Transportation
Completion: 2010
