New Well Production Doubles the Most Optimistic Estimate

Staff from General Mills, the City of Golden Valley, and WSB joined many local residents to dedicate the preserve

The City of North Branch had a problem finding water. Their three existing wells were all pumping less than half what many Metro wells produced and had a tendency to pump sand. A fourth well was started but collapsed during construction. The well was completed at a different location but continued to produce below the Metro norm. WSB was retained and tasked with identifying why the well had collapsed and with getting the City the water it needed.

WSB staff geologist BJ Bonin discovered unique structures in the bedrock of the region which were unfavorable to well building. A test well to the west of their old well field confirmed more favorable conditions. E. H. Renner and Sons built Production Well 5 and in early September 2007 and test-pumped at more than

double the most optimistic estimates—with only a trace of sand. This new well can pump as much or more water as the City’s four other wells combined, and will save the City at least $2,000,000 in future wells and well houses.

WSB hopes to continue using geological studies to identify locations ideal for well placement throughout the state. This will save cities money spent on wells that produce below expectations or interfere with the production of other local wells.
